General Appearance

 The Hungarian Vizsla is medium sized, of distinguished appearance, robust and medium boned build. 

Characteristics

 They are lively, intelligent, obedient, sensitive, very affectionate and easily trained are and bred for hunting fur and feather, pointing and retrieving from land water.

Temperament

 They are lively gentle mannered and demonstratively affectionate, fearless and with a well developed protective instinct. 

Head and Skull

 The head is lean and noble. The skull is moderately wide between the ears with a median line down the forehead and a moderate stop. The skull is a little longer than the muzzle although tapering is well squared at the end. The nostrils are well developed, broad and wide. The jaws are strong and powerful. The lips cover the jaws completely and are neither loose nor pendulous. The nose is brown in colour. 

Eyes

 They are neither deep nor prominent, of medium size, a shade darker in colour than the coat. They are slightly oval in shape, eyelids fitting tightly. 

Ears 

They are moderately low set, proportionately long with a thin skin and hanging down close to the cheeks. Rounded ‘V’ shape; not fleshy. 

Mouth 

It has sound and strong white teeth. The jaws are string with perfect, regular and complete scissor bite, i.e. Upper teeth closely overlapping the lower teeth and set square to the jaws. Full dentition desirable. 

Neck 

It is strong, smooth and muscular; moderately long, arched and devoid of dewlap. 

Forequarters 

The shoulders are well laid out and muscular, the elbows close to the body and straight, the forearm is long with, upright pasterns. 

Body 

They have a level back, short and well muscled with high withers. The chest is moderately broad and deep with prominent breast bone. The distance from withers to lowest part of chest equal to distance from chest to ground. The ribs are well sprung and the belly has a slight tuck-up beneath the loin. The croup is well muscled. 

Hindquarters 

They are straight when viewed from the rear, the thighs are well developed with moderate angulation with the hocks well let down. 

Feet 

They are rounded with short toes, arched and tight. Cat- like feet required, hare foot undesirable. The nails are short, strong and a shade darker in colour than the coat, dewclaws should be removed. 

Tail 

It is moderately thick, rather low set, customarily one third is docked. When moving carried horizontally. 

Gait/ Movement 

It is graceful elegant with a lively trot and ground covering gallop. 

Coat 

It is short, straight, dense, smooth and shiny, greasy to the touch. 

Colour 

They are coloured russet gold, small white marks on chest, and feet, though acceptable, undesirable. 

Size 

They measure 57-64 cms (22 ½ - 25 ins); in height at withers Bitches 53-60 cms (21- 23 ½ ins) and weigh: 20-30 kgs (48 ½ - 66 lbs).

 

Faults 

Any departure from the foregoing points should be considered a fault and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree. 

Note

 Male animals should have two apparently normal testicles fully descended into the scrotum.
