Stages of Training
The Learning Stage
In this phase a dog is supposed to learn all the commands that
it is taught like sit, down, come, stay, etc. Positive motivation is
the key to train your dog. This can be in the form of dog treats, toys
or praise. It is essential that the dog is trained in an environment
which is free from distractions. This enables the dog to focus on the
command that is being taught.
The Correction Stage
Once the dog learns all the commands, the next phase is the
correction stage. Now the dog understands what is expected from him
when a command is given; but refuses to perform as is expected. In
this case a correction in the form of a jerk on the leash is given.
A correction can only be given when the dog is not performing
a command, which it already knows. It is unfair to correct a dog when
the command is given for the first time. Also, the strength of the
correction varies from one dog to another and from situation to
situation. Usually, the correction should be in the form of one hard
jerk and not small repetitive jerks.
After the dog responds positively to the correction, it is
essential to praise the dog. This ensures that the bond between the
dog and the handler is maintained.
The Proofing Stage
Once the dog understands that he must obey all commands given,
he is then ready for the next phase of his training - the Proofing
Stage. This is also called as distraction training. By now the dog
performs all his commands when s/he is alone with the handler, but now
he is to be subjected to real life situations. The dog needs to
perform all his commands even when there are other dogs or people or
traffic all around him. Only when the dog is fully proofed, s/he is
said to be fully trained.
