CHIHUAHUA |
 |
APPEARANCE
A
graceful, alert, dainty, swift-moving little dog with saucy expression,
compact, and with terrier-like qualities of temperament.
The Chihuahua (pronunciation: sjie-wa-wa) is the smallest dog breed in
the world. It's an ancient race that finds their origin in the Maya
culture in Mexico. His name at that time, Techichi, should mean "little
dog of the sky". The little dog was presumably used for the
reconciliation of the dead people, sacrificed for the sins of the
deceased, and to accompany the soul to the next world. The Toltek
tribes, the descendants of the Maya culture, first showed these sacred
dogs in small statues inside their pyramids. Also the Aztecs, that
pushed the Tolteks aside, have bred the little dogs for religious
purposes. In the beginning of the 16th century, the Spaniards whipped
out all Mexican cultures which let the predecessor of the Chihuahua
disappear for centuries. Almost 400 years later, the dog was
rediscovered in the Mexican state Chihuahua and now thanks his name.
It's the oldest American dog breed, the smallest dog in the world
and huge popular in the US and Europe.
Thanks to
this little size, the dog breed has many admirers. Typical for the
Chihuahua, is a large apple dome head with short nose and big standing
ears. The eyes are big with lots of expression and all colours.
Especially the ruby red eyes are special for the breed. The
Chihuahua may have long hair (longcoat) or short hair (smooth coat).
TEMPERAMENT
Gay,
spirited and intelligent, neither snappy nor withdrawn. Alert, with
terrier-like qualities.
Characteristics
Alert
little dog; swift-moving with brisk, forceful action and saucy
expression. This little Mexican is very brave and a perfect watchdog. He
seems not to be aware of his small size. The Chihuahua is not even
afraid of a big dog. He is however less suitable for children, as this
dog is not a play toy. It's the only dog that can cry real tears. He
is cheerful and smart, lovely and full of joy.
COLOUR
Any colour or mixture of colours.
SIZE
